Number of Bankruptcies Filed Increases in First Half of 2010

In the first six months of 2010, it has been reported that the number of bankruptcies filed in the United States increased by over 14% when compared to the same six-month period in 2009. Data revealing the increase in bankruptcy filing was released by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts on August 17th.
The data shows that the total number of filings during the first six months of 2010 was 810,209. Last year, during the same time period, 711,550 Chapter 11, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy petitions were filed.
According to American Bankruptcy Institute Executive Director Samuel J. Gerdano, "The first half 2010 filings show that bankruptcies are on pace to surpass 1.6 million by year end."
