Number of Foreclosures Doubles in Third Quarter
The third quarter saw 339,000 foreclosures on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac mortgages started, a number that is almost double the amount that had modifications completed, 146, 507. These numbers are from the Federal Housing Finance Agency's databases.
Servicers were able to keep 227,300 homes out of foreclosure, including forbearance, deeds-in-lieu, short sales, repayments plans, and other actions. This number accounts for the three months leading up to September 30. That number is still down 16 percent from the second quarter. However, an increase in foreclosure starts of 23 percent occurred during that same period, the largest percentage increase that has been reported by the FHFA.
Modifications dropped in the third quarter as well, a whopping 14 percent, two-thirds coming from outside the Treasury Department's Home Affordable Modification Program. This program has been on the decline as well on bank portfolios.
