Senators Still Debate State Bankruptcy Option
On the long list of items that they are debating on the floor, a group of Republican senators is arguing whether to allow states to declare bankruptcy. They want to give states that are struggling financially access to federal bankruptcy courts.
In a recent statement to reporters Senator John Cornyn of Texas are contemplating the idea as a "responsible option." This would be in lieu of states accepting federal aid to pay back debts and run their states. While this idea is more popular on the GOP side of the Senate, it is in no way a consensus among Republican senators at this time.
In fact one such Republican, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed that the party has not made a wide-reaching decision yet. He also stated that "there will be no bailout of states" at any point in the near future.
