City of Hamtramck On Verge of Bankruptcy
Leaders of Hamtramck, Michigan met again for seven hours in an attempt to whittle down an already-lean budget.
The result of this meeting? Money was taken away from a fund to board up abandoned houses as well as trimming trees and cutting grass on hundreds of lots that are in the city's possession. City Manager William J. Cooper is hoping that the winter season will not prove to be so treacherous, cutting down on the anticipated plowing budget as well.
After assessing their most recent budget cuts the city leaders predict that they can last financially until March 1, but after that, there is no money to be spent. This small city, flanked by larger Detroit, has been begging the state to allow it to file for bankruptcy. However, since the state itself is also struggling financially, it doesn't look as though this will be an option anytime soon. Cooper added that "the state is concerned that if they say yes to one, if that door is opened, they'll have 30 cities more right behind us."
Although many companies and individuals have been filing for bankruptcy across the country, it is still fairly rare for municipalities to take this drastic route.
