American Airlines has Increase in Flight Purchases Despite Bankruptcy

Despite having filed for bankruptcy a few months ago, American Airlines enjoyed an increase in purchased flights over the past two months. This came as a surprise to company officials who were concerned that the very public Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing might deter fliers from using their airline. The company saw an increase in international flights, an increase that has helped the nation's third-biggest airline significantly. Last month alone paying fliers took 10 billion miles worth of flights. This represented a 1.4 percent increase from the same time last year.

As part of its bankruptcy filing, the company decided to decrease its passenger-carrying capacity. This is done by canceling certain flights on routes that have shown to be less profitable. By decreasing available flights and using larger planes, the company saw an increase in flight occupancy over the past two months. Last month the average passenger capacity was 78.5% full per flight. Last year, it was 75.8%. Considering bankruptcy as a means to save your business from further financial havoc?
