Steps You'll Need to Take When Filing for Chapter 7

Are you drowning in your debt? If so, you should consider filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Before you can start enjoying the benefits of bankruptcy protection, however, there is a checklist of tasks that you must accomplish in order to qualify. No matter what state you reside in, you will need to complete a credit counseling session. Proof of this session must be included with your bankruptcy filing packet. You will be required to pay a filing fee, which normally runs around $300.

Once you have filed for bankruptcy, you will then be appointed a trustee by the court. This person will hold a "meeting of the creditors" shortly after you have filed for bankruptcy. This is a brief meeting where you will meet with the trustee and your creditors will be invited to come and ask you questions about the filing. In most cases, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing is completed in 4 to 8 months from the date you file. Once you have successfully completed your filing, you cannot file for this type of bankruptcy again for another eight years. Have additional questions related to the Chapter 7 bankruptcy process? If so, contact the Malaise Law Firm to get immediate answers from a Houston bankruptcy lawyer.
